A poll released on March 19 by IMEU Policy Project and Demand Progress, and conducted by Data For Progress, found a majority of voters disapprove of President Trump’s strikes on Iran, support a war powers resolution to rein in Trump’s war, and believe the war benefits Israel more than America. The survey of 1,215 like voters found that voters are less likely to support Republicans in the November midterms as a result of the war, and Democrats could benefit if they draw a strong contrast on supporting Israel. A Democratic candidate for Congress in a general election who says they would reduce support to Israel to prioritize focusing on domestic issues gains a 15-point edge over a Democratic candidate who says they will prioritize supporting Israel.

KEY FINDINGS:

A majority of voters oppose the war with Iran and believe it benefits Israel over the United States.

  • 56% believe war against Iran benefits Israel more than it benefits America, while just 29% say America benefits more.

  • 53% of voters disapprove of Trump’s strikes against Iran, while 43% approve, adding to the many polls that have found majority-disapproval for this war - the lowest approval at the start of a US war in decades

  • 51% support Congress passing a war powers resolution to rein in Trump’s military actions against Iran, while 44% oppose a war powers resolution

Voters are less likely to support Republicans in November as a result of the war with Iran - while younger Republicans continue to drift away from Republican leadership.

  • 43% of voters say they are less likely to support Republicans in 2026 as a result of Trump’s war, while 31% say they are more likely.

  • Republican voters are about evenly divided in a primary election between a Republican who would reduce support for Israel and one who prioritizes supporting Israel - with major divisions based on age. 61% of Republicans under age 45 would prefer a candidate who would reduce support for Israel, while 56% of Republicans over age 45 would prefer a candidate who prioritizes support for Israel.

In a general election between Republicans and Democrats with identical views about prioritizing support for Israel, Republicans win. Democrats who shift to saying they will reduce support for Israel win by double-digits.

  • In a race between a Democrat and Republican who both prioritize support for Israel identically, the Republican wins by 4 points. 10% of Democratic voters say they would sit out such an election and just 3% of Republicans would vote for the Democrat.

  • In a split test, a Democratic candidate who says they would reduce support for Israel wins by 11 points (52-41) over a Republican candidate who prioritizes support for Israel - a 15-point jump for the Democrat. Only 1% of Democrats say they would sit out such an election and 15% of Republican voters say they would support the Democrat.

A plurality of voters believe Israel has too much influence over US foreign policy

  • 43% of voters say Israel has too much influence over US foreign policy, while 41% say the right amount and just 5% say too little.

  • 59% of Democrats and 25% of Republicans say Israel has too much influence - which rises to 32% among Republicans under age 45

A poll released in December by IMEU Policy Project and conducted by YouGov, found that a majority of Republicans under age 45 wanted to reduce taxpayer-funded support to Israel, and that Democrats who supported restricting support to Israel were able to win over a significant portion of Republican voters. A September 2025 YouGov poll released by IMEU Policy Project and Gen-Z For Change also found Democratic voters were much more likely to sit out a general election if a Democrat who prioritizes support for Israel were on the ballot.
